The third school of our Cosmo City Schools upliftment programme (after Tirisano Primary and Sgodiphola Secondary) Cosmo Secondary is also quintile 1 ranked school, a reflection of the extremely poor community. This upliftment campaign has a community-focused approach, so that all children in this community to benefit from grade R through to Matric, leaving a long-lasting impact on the Cosmo City community.
The Foundation’s focus for strategic investment in education is predominantly on science and maths. Science and maths education in South Africa is currently in a crisis. According to the World Economic Forum (2015) South Africa ranked last out of 140 countries for the quality of Maths and Science education. Results from the Annual National Assessment in 2014 showed that the average performance in maths at grade 9 level is 11%.
The outcome will be two fully equipped and revitalised science laboratories – one for Physical Science and the other for Life Science – as well as the establishment of a computer centre. These rooms will be state-of-the-art, and equipped with interactive whiteboard learning technology, with curriculum aligned software. Teachers will undergo training on these systems and be issued certificates once training has been completed. The SAME Foundation commits to continually assist our beneficiaries to ensure their training and support needs are met. The rooms will be secured to deter theft and vandalism.
