LERATONG HOSPITAL: PAEDIATRIC UNIT

Update:

The unit opened mid December 2015, in time for the vital holiday period. The official handover took place in March 2016. Thank you to our donors for contributing to the success of this amazing project.

Background:

Leratong Hospital is the only Level 2 Regional Hospital serving the entire area of the West Rand and the adjacent area of Johannesburg Metro. Seventy Nine (79) clinics and hospitals refer patients to Leratong.

Leratong Hospital is our flagship health project in Gauteng. Since our national expansion in 2010, we have renovated and fully equipped five units within the hospital, namely the main reception area, the Accident & Emergency unit, the walk-in casualty unit, and in 2013 we handed over both the newly renovated and equipped neonatal and maternity units.

The problem:

The paediatric unit consists of 157 Paediatric beds and often runs over 100% capacity. This is where children between the ages of two and 12 years are hospitalised and treated. The unit is overcrowded, infrastructure is aged, and lacks the essential life-saving equipment needed for the doctors to do their jobs effectively – this creates a real threat of cross-infection and disease outbreaks within the unit.

The Solution:

The SAME Foundation will be completely renovating and equipping this unit so that it is on par with and better than those of private facilities. Changes include infrastructure extensions and additions, the latest medical technology and resources, as well as appropriate resting areas for the doctors and nurses who serve in this unit.
